ReplicatorG - lowering the barrier to 3D printing

ReplicatorG - lowering the barrier to 3D printing
This is the software that will drive your MakerBot Replicator, Thing-O-Matic, CupCake CNC, RepRap machine, or generic CNC machine. You can give it a GCode or STL file to process, and it takes it from there. It's cross platform, easily installed, and is based on the familiar Arduino / Processing environments. ReplicatorG is used by thousands of MakerBot Operators, and has printed tens of thousands of 3D objects and counting.

LinuxCNC (the Enhanced Machine Control)

linuxcnc.org - LinuxCNC (the Enhanced Machine Control) is a software system for computer control of machine tools such as milling machines and lathes.
LinuxCNC is free software with open source code. Current versions of LinuxCNC are entirely licensed under the GNU General Public License and Lesser GNU General Public License (GPL and LGPL)

LinuxCNC provides:
  • several graphical user interfaces including one for touch screens
  • an interpreter for "G-code" (the RS-274 machine tool programming language)
  • a realtime motion planning system with look-ahead
  • operation of low-level machine electronics such as sensors and motor drives
  • an easy to use "breadboard" layer for quickly creating a unique configuration for your machine
  • a software PLC programmable with ladder diagrams
  • easy installation with .deb packages or a Live-CD
It does not provide drawing (CAD - Computer Aided Design) or G-code generation from the drawing (CAM - Computer Automated Manufacturing) functions.

  • It can simultaneously move up to 9 axes and supports a variety of interfaces.
  • The control can operate true servos (analog or PWM) with the feedback loop closed by the LinuxCNC software at the computer, or open loop with "step-servos" or stepper motors.
  • Motion control features include: cutter radius and length compensation, path deviation limited to a specified tolerance, lathe threading, synchronized axis motion, adaptive feedrate, operator feed override, and constant velocity control.
  • Support for non-Cartesian motion systems is provided via custom kinematics modules. Available architectures include hexapods (Stewart platforms and similar concepts) and systems with rotary joints to provide motion such as PUMA or SCARA robots.
  • LinuxCNC runs on Linux using real time extensions. Support currently exists for version 2.4 and 2.6 Linux kernels with real time extensions applied by RT-Linux or RTAI patches.

WordPress site AWS migration success story: How C21Media scales to meet demands (techrepublic)

Scaling WordPress in the cloud can be a painful experience. Here's how the WordPress site C21Media migrated to Amazon Web Services and scaled to meet demand.
Some lucky WordPress site owners are the victims of their own success. As their site gains more content, increases in popularity, and delivers an increasingly sophisticated service, it requires more storage, bigger bandwidth, and greater processing power.
Greater power is required to keep the site responsive and to meet customer expectations. Coping with online success requires scaling up (bigger machines) or scaling out (more machines). WordPress, like many applications running on the LAMP stack, needs care and attention to make it scale.
Ignoring the problem means losing customers. Nobody likes a slow website. There is no hard number, but Google does have global statistics on global site speed. If it takes two seconds to render your wares, even the goldfish don't lose their concentration. Ten seconds? Customers are shopping around. Twenty seconds? They are long gone.

Game servers: UDP vs TCP by Christoffer Lernö

Game servers: UDP vs TCP by Christoffer Lernö, an article by Christoffer Lernö can be found at http://1024monkeys.wordpress.com/2014/04/01/game-servers-udp-vs-tcp/Why UDP is “hard”

Topics:
- Background
- What TCP means in practice
- Why UDP is “hard”
- The flawed case for TCP
- When TCP doesn’t work
- Myth: Reliable UDP is TCP implemented poorly
- The bottom line:
So UDP or TCP?
Use HTTP/HTTPS over TCP if you are making occasional, client-initiated stateless queries and an occasional delay is ok.
Use persistent plain TCP sockets if both client and server independently send packets but an occasional delay is ok (e.g. Online Poker, many MMOs).
Use UDP if both client and server may independently send packets and occasional lag is not ok (e.g. Most multiplayer action games, some MMOs)
These are mixable too: Your MMO client might first use HTTP to get the latest updates, then connect to the game servers using UDP.
Never be afraid of using the best tool for a task.

ELM 327 Bluetooth v1.5 OBD2 Interface Scanner (Blue/Orange) Original CD

Today I received my ELM 327 Bluetooth v1.5 OBD2 Car Interface Scanner (with a blue/orange label) from Hong Kong.

The label is the same as the one in the picture above. The package contains the interface and a software CD. The software in this CD is a total crap!

CD contents:
Bluesoleil_3.2_VoIP_Multilingual_070406
scantool_net113win
User manual.doc

Neither of these programs worked with the interface. The interface paired correctly when using windows bluetooth but it did not paired with Bluesoleil, it did not recognized the interface. Scantool_net113win is a 16bit color application! More chinese crap!

A link to the original CD contents packed in a zip file is available here: (46.6 MB)

I tested the OBD interface on a 2007 gasoline car with the software listed below, on a laptop with Windows 7. Only a few worked with this interface, but those worked very well.

WORKING:
OBD Auto Doctor 1.7.2 DEMO
Torque Lite 1.1.49 for Android

NOT WORKING:
Dashcommand v3.0.1 (Build 2770)
EasyObdII 2.5.0 Free Version
OBDToolbox V0.3
OBDwiz 2.16.3 demo
PCMScan v2.4.12 (Build 1194) demo
Scan Master Free 0.4.0.0
Scantool_net113win
scantool_net121win
Scanxl Professional v3.5.1 demo
VCDS Lite 1.2
